The general policies concerning Physics 131 are described below. Any exceptions to these policies will be announced in class.
The Course Calendar contains the lecture schedule, lab schedule, exam schedule, and homework due dates.
Lectures are intended and designed to supplement your efforts outside of class to read and understand the text. Lecture topics will consist of an overview of each subject area, along with as much discussion of the most challenging concepts and problem-solving techniques associated with that subject area as time allows. Unless a specific topic is explicitly omitted, you will be responsible for all material presented in each chapter, regardless of the content of the lectures.
It is extremely important that you read each chapter carefully before it is discussed in class.
Quizzes and review sessions will occur during the evening sessions: Monday nights at 7:00p. Other uses for this period may be announced as needed. Mid-semester tests are designed to be completed in 50 minutes; however, you can work for the full two-hour period if you want.
When inclement weather dictates, UNCA implements a late-start schedule. It is very rare that classes are cancelled altogether. In any event, missed or abbreviated classes will not significantly alter the schedule given on the Course Calendar; lectures will be abridged so that the material covered will not be affected. Compensate for missed or shortened classes by increasing your efforts to read the text and complete homework assignments. Always feel free to come by for individual help, especially in such circumstances.
Many, if not most aspects of Physics 131 will involve using the Web. You have many options:
Please don't fret if you lack experience with Web browsers or even the Web in general. Feel free to contact me at any time for assistance.
Homework for Physics 131 will be administered via the World Wide Web (WWW). Instructions for how to register, log in and use the online homework resources are on the main course page.
Attendance is required in laboratory, lecture and during test periods. You must provide documentation from your physician if you are unable to take a test because of illness (no exceptions).
You are allowed three unexcused absences during lecture. After that, each unexcused absence will reduce your final average by three points.
If you miss class, it is your responsibility to acquire any important information covered during the missed lecture from other class members. Feel free to contact me in this regard but be aware that I do not maintain class notes for you to photocopy.
Additional attendance policies relating to laboratory are described below.
There are no longer any restrictions placed upon calculators used for quizzes and exams. To avoid providing folks who have calculators equipped with alphanumeric displays an unfair advantage, everyone will be able to bring a 3x5 index card of information (one side only, both sides for the final) to tests.
Each laboratory session will begin with a short math review, followed by a very short quiz on the math review of the previous lab.
Attendance during laboratory periods is required. You are allowed to miss two laboratory sessions during the semester. Each additional laboratory absence will lower your final grade by one letter.
Each laboratory you attend and for which you submit a satisfactory report will add 2 online homework points to your homework total. If you answer the math review quiz correctly, you will get an additional online homework point, for a total of 3 possible homework points per lab. If you don't miss any labs, you can get up to six extra credit online homework points.
If you are late to laboratory, it is your responsibility to make sure that you have not been marked absent. Be aware that information necessary to complete the laboratory is discussed during the first twenty minutes or so of the laboratory period, and thus repeated tardiness will not be tolerated. If you are over 15 minutes late, you have missed laboratory. If you are tardy and miss the math review quiz, you cannot take it later.
See the Course Calendar.
